Rietvlei Farmstead

Sarel Johannes Marais and a younger brother Jan Gabriel settled in the area after the Great Trek. Jan established the farm "Diepkloof" in the Suikerbosrand while Sarel established the farm "Rietvlei", these are the remains of this farmstead. The farm was inhabited from early 1850's until 1978 when the area was declared a nature reserve by the government.
