Historic Union Cemetery

In 1663 the town bought one acre of land off of Edman Elleat for a burying place which in now the Union Cemetery. This was enlarged in 1886 and $100 appropriated "to improve old part of Union Cemetery" in 1894. The earliest legible grave markers date from the early eighteenth century. The most noteworthy grave is that of the beloved poet John Greenleaf Whittier, who for 56 years until his death in 1892 was Amesbury's most distinguished citizen.
