African American freed slaves Mary and Jack Dodson had both belonged to a man named Jim Dodson while enslaved. They fell in love and married in 1870, when Mary was 21 years old. They moved to Manchaca, Texas by 1900 and built their home, which is currently the neighborhood nursery "Its About Thyme." Mary and Jack raised nine children, three girls and six boys. Jack Dodson excelled as a businessman in the community, owning a meat market and a molasses mill.
