Shipwreck of the Magnifique Monument
Dorchester, United States
Monument text: The most famous shipwreck in Boston Harbor happened in 1782 on a sand bar around Lovell's Island. The ship was France's finest: a seventy-four gun man-of-war called the Magnifique on loan to America to help secure her new independence. Since the pilot was a Bostonian, America felt obligated to replace the French ship with the first and only Revolutionary War American warship. The ship, called the America, was just being completed in Plymouth, New Hampshire.
