Mordecai - Birthplace of Andrew Johnson
Raleigh, United States
Raleigh Historic Site. Andrew Johnson, 17th President of the US, was born in this house on December 29, 1808. At that time, the house stood on Fayetteville St. behind Casso's Inn. The original structure was pine but only 15 original exterior boards remain. The fireplace and chimney are reconstructions but are authentic 18th century types, as are the cypress shingles. The building has been moved 5 times. In 1975 it was moved to its present site and restored to its original 1790 appearance.
