Chatswood Mick Stanley Reserve

Born at Chelsea, Mick spent his youth at sea. In 1936 he started his 21 year career with Auckland Harbour Ferries. During this time he served in the Second World War, 21st Battalion as a signaller but was sent home, wounded, from the Battle of El Alamein, Egypt. In 1959, Mick was elected to the Birkenhead Borough Council and in 1968 was elected Mayor, a position he held until 1977. Mick also served on the North Shore Drainage Board (1963-1977 and 1981-1986) and the Auckland Regional Authority. He died on 29 February 1996, aged 90, at his home in Rawene Road, Birkenhead.
