The Last of the Just

The Last of the Just sculpture by Molly Macalister, adjacent to the Chapel Lake at the University of Waikato was the first piece of art purchased for the University in 1962. The wounded human figure cast in cement was inspired by the Russian invasion of Hungary. Macalister was a leading sculptor of her generation and not afraid to tackle serious issues with powerful figurative works. Originally sited alongside A Block, the first permanent University building, it has since been relocated to its current and more contemplative site.
