Whiskey Rebellion
Washington, United States
In 1791, the National Road Heritage Corridor was the stage for a national crisis that came to be known as the Whiskey Rebellion, a scene of climatic moments in the history of the United States and its newly formed government. Responding to the first federal tax ever laid on an American product, gangs of rebels began to attack federal officials, and represented a very real threat to the country's sovereignty and its government's authority.
