RedBird - Harry McDaniel, 2006
Raleigh, United States
Harry McDaniel Lives in Asheville, North Carolina RedBird Powder-coated aluminum and steel, 2006 Harry McDaniel uses the North Carolina state bird as a springboard for RedBird's design. Initially, the sculpture gives the impression of giant flowers swaying in a breeze, but as viewers move around the piece, they then notice The red tops are not flower-like shapes, but irregular and angular segments, birdlike in shape. According to the artist, "Few people will see the cardinal right away. Others will see the head, or a wing, tip, and then realize the implied connection to the other pieces. Once the cardinal is seen, it becomes visible from any angle." Collection of the City of Raleigh Commissioned to celebrate the City of Raleigh Arts Commission's 30th Anniversary
