Irving House

Victoria, Canada

John and Jean Irving built this handsome Italiante style house following their marriage in 1882. Jean was the daughter of Alexander Munro, chief factor of the Hudson's Bay company. John, soon of William Irving of new Westminster, took over his father's Pioneer Line steamships at the age of 18. He bought out the Hudson's Bay Line and in 1883 named the new enterprise the Canadian Navigation Company. In 1902, he sold it to the Canadian Pacific Railway to become the CPR Coast Service. The Irving House was demolished in the late 1920's and the land become a park in 1944.
