Site of "The Brickpile" An Early Salinas High School Leonard Cooper, a talented African American playwright, musician, artist and composer, graduated in 1917 from the high school that once stood here. John Steinbeck graduated in 1919. The Coopers are mentioned in Steinbeck's "Travels With Charley."
