Historic Market House

Lock Haven, United States

Fox's Lock Haven Market House The Lock Haven Market House is a 2 ½ story brick building constructed in 1871 at a cost of $20,000. Exactly 120 years later, at a cost in excess of $200,000, the building was restored. The design is Romanesque with corner Towers, arched and key stoned windows, brick friezes, pointed towers and dormers.  These pointed tower designs are captured in the stained glass within the restaurant. The Market House demonstrates some of the most unique architectural features in Central Pennsylvania. This prominent historical building was constructed by the Lock Haven Hall & Market Company; organized in 1868 for the sole purpose of operating a farmer’s market. Taking only six months to construct, the building became a “hub” of activity in early Lock Haven. Farmers from the area leased spaces inside the building to sell their goods. Below the restaurant, the Market House basement has a 160 foot center corridor with an arched brick ceiling. Partitioned on either side of this long corridor are twenty-two small rooms used to store grain and feeds. Products were then hoisted through floor openings and loaded into wagons inside the building.
