Eastern State Guard Tower

Prior to 1923, for almost 100 years since opening in 1829, there were no guard towers at the penitentiary. Instead, all guards worked on the ground. In 1923, six prisoners overtook guards to scale the 30 foot walls; all but one prisoner was caught within hours. As a result of this event, the guard towers were installed.
