Bristol Bridge
Bristol, United Kingdom
This first bridge in this place probably dates back to iron age times. The settlement that formed here later was named Brygg Stowe, place of the bridge, the source of the name of the city of Bristol. The bridge was rebuild several times. In the 14th century the wooden bridge which had to be rebuilt several times was replaced by the present stone arches. The bridge toll that was imposed on that occasion led to the Bristol Bridge Riots, an important event leading up go the English revolution. The pillars on the side of the bridge were added in Victorian times when the bridge was widened. The most recent addition to the stylistic mix is the modern road surface from the Thatcher era.
