Historical Belmont Colliery Site

Newcastle, Australia

Opened in 1925, it produced nearly 2000 tons of coal per day. In the 60's and 70's, about 600000 cubic meters of chitter was dumped on the site. As a result, trees can't be planted due to the risk of bush fire penetrating and igniting the chitter below the surface. The mine was closed in 1982.
