Winchester Center "The Village Green"

Site of the second meeting house built in 1786. The white, two-story structure stood close to the center of The Green facing south. The horse she was located on the north side. There was no fireplace or chimney until a large box stove was installed in 1833. The preacher's pulpit, decorated with wooden vines and grapes, stood high at the top of a narrow staircase. The pews were enclosed with high walls and a door on the aisle. In 1841 the present-day church was built, partially constructed with timbers from the old meeting house. General Training, September 26th, 1793 On this ground the 25th Regiment of the Connecticut Colonial Militia was paraded and trained by Colonel Ozias Brownson, commanding. Captain Samuel Hurlbut was in command of the fourth company. May the blessings of Almighty God continue to shine upon this land.
