NIU The Six Questions

Dekalb, United States

Hidden in a desolate forested area behind Echo Park lies a sculpture bench installed in Sept 1981. “The Six Questions” was designed by artist Steven Beyer purchased by the alumni association for approximately $10,000. Engraved in large capital letters of the surface are the questions: Do you need a bath Are you going home Do you cry Have you been introduced What is your next move Do you know the facts? The questions are based on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs – Physiological, safety, emotional, respect of others, self-fulfillment and search of knowledge and beauty. The bench was originally located in the MLK commons during the last 1980s and is “supposed to capture the essence of NIU students with the six most commonly asked NIU questions” It was moved several times to the West Lagoon, then to its location now in Echo Park.
