MYSTIC
Bog Iron
North Olmsted, United States
Long ago, Ohio was covered by ancient sees. Sediments settled to the sea bottom eventually becoming the shales and sandsto es of our area. The Rocky River has been carving through these rocks for the past twelve thousand years, eroding them and allowing trapped minerals like iron pyrite to leach out. This heavy material oxidizes and collects in the low areas along the West Channel pond causing the water to be rust colored. In time, the rest sediments will form a new rock called bog iron.
