St John's Anglican Church

Sydney, Australia

In 1835 James and William MacArthur wrote to the governor with a proposal to erect an Anglican church on the site which their father had given. The colonial architect, William Mortimer Lewis, was appointed supervisory architect, but the basis of the decorated Gothic design came from John Cunningham, a Liverpool architect well known to the MacArthur family. The church was consecrated on 7th June 1849.
