Stanton by Dale Village Cross

Ilkeston, United Kingdom

This stone cross dates to the medieval period, although the top of the cross was replaced in 1632. It is Grade II listed. Village crosses like these represent meeting points where village business would have been conducted. Markets would have been held by them. Many predate the village church, and as such were where itinerant preachers would deliver sermons to the local population.
