Stapleford Old Cross
Nottingham, United Kingdom
This Early Medieval cross boasts some of the finest Angli-Saxon carving in Nottinghamshire. There are many interweaving foliate designs, and on one face us a winged figure brandishing a spear. This is thought to represent an archangel. It may date as far back as the 8th century, but is more likely to date from the early 11th century. This cross may have given the town its name: Stapleford means 'the ford near the post'. This carved stone is so important that it is Grade I listed.
