History of Potomac Yard
Alexandria, United States
PulteGroup Inc. is pleased to present Potomac Yard; a community that provides more than 167 acres of creative and thoughtful residential, office, retail and commercial development serving current and future Alexandria residents and visitors. Concepts for redeveloping Potomac Yard originated in the late 1980's when the Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac Railroad began closing rail operations on the site. More than a decade later, in 1999, the City of Alexandria approved the initial plans for what you see today. The final transformation of this former railroad yard was brought about through a 2005 partnership between Pulte Homes and Sentex Homes called Potomac Yard Development, LLC (PYD) PYD's planning process was transparent, inclusive, and involved a great deal of community participation. PYD worked with the City of Alexandria and local residents to ensure that the new project served the area well. One of the project's main intentions was to blend with the existing character of adjacent neighborhoods. The underlying vision the planning participants was to transform the former rail yard into a walkable, attractive and enjoyable neighborhood complemented by tree-lined streets, abundant open spaces and engaging architecture. The planning process provided community features that are valued by the greater Alexandria populous. Notable features include a 24-acre city park (at the time the city's largest) , the city's first new fire station in 30 years and one that contains the added benefit of City owned affordable housing and the reconstruction of the Monroe Avenue bridge, greatly improving the connectivity of the northern and southern portions of the City along the Route One corridor. Once a brownfield property, Potomac Yard now hosts a first-class development that incorporates sustainable design and ideals wherever practical. The PulteGroup is proud to offer this truly unique Alexandria community that will serve as a cornerstone for generations of area residents to work, play and call home.
