The Daniel Bermes Boulevard Brewery Historic Marker

Union City, United States

On this site is the administration building of what was the largest brewery in Hudson County - The Daniel Bermes Boulevard Brewery. Daniel Bermes emigrated to Union Hill (now Union City) at the age if 24, from Hessen-Darmstadt, in 1848, to escape the revolutions in Germany. In 1851, he established the brewery & it covered 42 acres, bounded by the area between 44th and 45th Streets, Park Avenue & Hudson Avenue. The site included a brewing building, office building, ice houses, refrigeration houses, malt houses, artesian well, stables with 65 horses & 36 delivery wagons. The plant was an architectural work of art & was supervised by brew master, Frederick Schimper, assisted by his brother, Carl Schimper, brewing supervisor. The beer received the highest award, a gold medal for its superiority. Mr. and Mrs. Bermes, public spirited & honored citizens, were always attuned to the best interests of Union Hill & Hudson County. Dedicated on this 27th of October, 2012.
