Tasman Crossing: Weddell Sea
Sunnyvale, United States
The Tasman crossing neighborhood derives its name and symbolic motif from the underlying nautical theme that exists within the street names. The street names recall open seas and sparkling blue bays that have a historic past, with tales of royal intrigue and bold exploration. The compass motif highlights the cardinal points of the earth, and its elegant simplicity eases the task of navigation and way finding. Crossing the neighborhood, one may encounter the Tasman and Weddell Seas, sail through the Persian Gulf and visit the Montego, Toyama, Kiholo and Monterey Bays. The Weddell Sea is bound by Coats Land and the Antarctic peninsula. The Weddell Sea is now known as the widest sea, spanning 1243 miles across and encompassing 17.5 million square miles in area. Ice sheets which used to extend almost 4500 square miles have completely disappeared. It was the icy sea that captured explorer Ernest Shackelton's ship, the Endurance, by crushing the ship's hull during his 1914 Trans-Antarctic expedition.
