Portsea Island workhouse was erected in 1843-6 on St Mary's Road, Portsea, officially opening in July 1846. It was designed by Augustus Livesay and Thomas Ellis Owen of Portsmouth and its construction cost £2,500. The building is now a mixture of privately owned and rented apartments. The central image is of the old board room, now a meeting and community room, which includes wall displays showing the history of the site, as well as the two commemorative plaques shown
