Jack Fisher was a widely decorated World War 1 hero who was raised in Santa Ana. He was a corporal in the US Army 58th Infantry Regiment of the 4th division. He began his overseas service in France, earning Purple Heart and the French Croix de Guerre with palm. As a result of his actions at the Battle of Belleau Wood, he won a second palm to his Croix de Guerre. He was hospitalized after being wounded in action and received a cluster to his Purple Heart and the Medaille Militaire. Jack return to action and fought in the Battle of Verdun and Battle of Argonne Forest. Seriously wounded, he was one of only three men to return alive, carrying his lieutenant on his back. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and another palm to his Croix de Guerre. After he recovered, he again return to the front lines. He received honors for his heroism from many nations, including Italy, Belgium, Britain, and France. In his last battle, he laid and unconscious in the battlefield with his legs shattered by shrapnel for 48 hours. Jack survived and became an artist and cartoonist from Santa Ana register. He devoted many hours to help organize in Santa Ana chapter of the Disabled American Veterans. He passed away a few years later from the effects of his experiences. Jack Fisher represented the spirit strength of character the residence of Santa Ana are proud to recognize. This park has been named in honor of Jack Fisher's extraordinary sacrifices to the United States of America and continued sense of civic duty. Dedicated August 14, 1933 Rededicated November 11, 2001
