Merstham Rail Station

Redhill, United Kingdom

Opened by the South Eastern Railway in 1844 (replacing an earlier station to the south), Merstham station was rebuilt in 1905, with a booking hall, toilets and waiting room on the up side and a waiting room on the down side. The style of the building is difficult to define and quite unlike anything else produced by the SER. It is a single story brick building, clad in pebbledash, save a red brick plinth, quoins and elliptical arches above the small casement windows. The roof is slate, with a broken pediment above the entrance and soffits decorated by wooden corbelling. The main building was badly damaged by fire in the 1980's but subsequently repaired. The down side building was demolished around the same time and replaced with a small glass shelter. Recently the footbridge has been replaced.
