The Cathedral construction was started in 1920 and finally consecrated in 1936 and dedicated to Our Lady of the Atonement. The Cathedral became an evacuation center in WWII and withstood the carpet bombing of the city by the Japanese in 1945, thereby saving thousands of lives.
