Mother of Sorrows Complex

Blue Island, United States

Founded by the Sisters, Servants of Mary (Mantellates) in 1954, Mother of Sorrows was originally opened as a co-ed boarding school. After closing its doors in 1983, the campus remained abandoned except for the remaining nuns in the convent. After streaks of vandalism, the nuns invited Affordable Recovery Housing - a men's drug and alcohol recovery program - in 2010 as the new tenants to watch over the campus. Renamed to "Mother of Sorrows Complex," it now houses 2 additional churches: Englewood Nondenominational Church and Christ for Everyone Church, as well as Affordable Recovery Housing.
