St Francis was born of Assisi, Italy, the son of a wealthy merchant. In 1205 he left his worldly life to devote his remaining years to the care of the sick and poor. St Francis felt a strong sense of brotherhood with all living beings, children, birds, animals, and flowers. He enjoyed a simple love of nature and was known to preach to the birds and animals. He is known and loved by many as the "Patron Saint of Animals"
