Meadow Sign

Reston, United States

A meadow is an ever-changing habitat that includes many varieties of grasses and wildflowers. It can provide an alternative to a turf area in your own yard. Meadows provide an abundance of food and cover for a variety of wildlife such as butterflies, birds, turtles and snakes. In order to halt the natural process of succession - the orderly progression of an area from bare ground to climax forest - this area is mowed yearly in the early spring. Mowing at this time of year keeps the seed heads available for food and cover throughout the harsh winter months and must be done before the new growth of early spring wildflowers appear.
