The Avalon Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicle (DSRV) was launched in July 1972 by Lockheed Missiles and Space Company of Sunnyvale, CA for the purpose of research, rescue, and recovery. It had an operating depth of 5,000 feet and had access hatches where crew from a disabled submarine could board directly. It was deactivated in the year 2000 and has since been replaced with the next generation Submarine Rescue Diving and Recompression System (SRDRS).
