General George Johnston Memorial

Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. Born in Hillsborough, North Carolina, but reared and schooled in Alabama, he was a graduate of Alabama's Howard College and Cumberland University Law School in Tennessee. He became an attorney in Marion, Alabama, the mayor of Marion in 1856, and a state legislator in 1857 and 1858. At the start of the Civil War he joined the 4th Alabama as 2nd Lieutenant and went to the thick of the fighting at First Bull Run,
