Garden of Gethsemane

Tucson, United States

The sculptor, Felix Lucero, vowed to God as he lay critically injured during World War I, that if he survived he would dedicate the remainder of his life to religious sculpting. He spent the next 20 years in this pious work before arriving in Tucson in 1938. The Garden of Gethsemane started in 1945 and has survived time, floods, and vandalism. The present facility represents a cooperative effort between the City of Tucson, the State of Arizona, and the Downtown Development Corporation.
