The Dutch Royal Family found a safe haven in Ottawa during the Second World War, when The Netherlands was occupied by the Nazis. To ensure the royal baby's Dutch citizenship, the Canadian government temporarily ceded the maternity suite at this hospital to The Netherlands. Princess Margriet was therefore born on Dutch soil. This is the basis for The Netherlands' annual gift of tulips to Canada.
