Ladd's Circle

Portland, United States

Ladd's Circle is a rhododendron garden in the center of the historic Ladd's Addition neighboorhood. Ladd's Addition was named after William S. Ladd, a mid 19th century Portland Mayor who owned a 126 acre farm on the land. When the city of east Portland was merged into Portland in 1891, Ladd subdivided the land for residential use. The diagonal road arrangement, which is at odds with the standard grid format of surrounding neighborhoods, was inspired by the L'Enfant Plan for Washington D.C.
